Did you ever think an unexpected summer job could change your entire career path? That's exactly what happened to me! While I initially pursued a degree in kinesiology with the goal of becoming a physical therapist, fate had other plans.
Finding My Passion in the Classroom:
Let me tell you a story about how life sometimes throws you the best curveballs. Here's the thing: teaching wasn't exactly in my life plan. I graduated with a degree in kinesiology, thinking physical therapy or something medical was the way to go. But then, summer after graduation, a friend needed a teacher's aide. With no concrete plans at that point, I took the leap.
Little did I know, that summer gig would change EVERYTHING. Stepping into that 2nd-grade classroom, I was hooked! Being around the kids, their endless curiosity, and the joy of seeing them grasp new things – it simply filled me up.
Halfway through that year, something shifted. I knew, without a doubt, that teaching was what I wanted to do. So I went back to school and by the next year, I became a 3rd-grade teacher. The rest, as they say, is history.
For the next 11 years, I embraced the challenges and rewards of various grade levels, from 1st to 8th. While each held its own charm, I truly found my niche in junior high. Yep, you might call me "crazy" for loving that age group, but their energy and humor were infectious and I LOVED IT!
A New Chapter, A New Passion:
Then, life took another turn. A few years after having my second child, my husband and I decided it was best for our family if I stayed home. So, in 2017, I closed the classroom door and
transitioned out of full-time teaching.
Stepping away from the classroom was tough. Sure, I subbed occasionally, but something still felt incomplete. I craved that creative energy, that feeling of making a difference. Fast forward to November 2022, and I discovered the perfect outlet: Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT).
Empowering Teachers:
Opening my TPT store was the perfect solution! It reconnected me with that creative process I craved. Creating engaging activities and resources for teachers wasn't just about reliving the classroom experience. It was about making a positive impact. Knowing that my work lightens the load for teachers and fosters a love of learning in their students – that's the driving force behind everything I do now.
Do I miss being in the classroom full-time? Sure, there are moments.
Will I ever go back to full-time teaching? Honestly, probably not.
While I miss those connections, this new path allows me to be present for my family while still feeling connected to the world of education in a way that excites me.
This journey has been a beautiful reminder that passions can take unexpected turns, and sometimes, the most fulfilling moments come from the impact we create on others.
